This is a new and revised edition of a book which contains a remarkable amount of information on the steam era on British Railways. A companion volume to Hugh Longworth's British Railways Steam Locomotives 1948-1968, this book provides a locomotive-by-locomotive allocation record during the period from 1948 to 1966.
This volume contains a class-by-class, locomotive-by-locomotive record of each steam locomotive that was in service on 1 January 1948, as well as all those built by BR after that date, and the end of 1966. Focusing on seven years during this period, 1948, 1951, 1954, 1957, 1960, 1963 and 1966, there are complete locomotive allocation records for each of those years, as well as distribution maps to illustrate how each individual class was allocated during the relevant years and a shed-by-shed listing for each year.
Each locomotive is listed with its number, name, full reallocation listings and withdrawal dates. Shed names and shed code changes are shown, coloured graphics are used throughout to highlight the different regions and a map shows the location of the depots.
Although primarily designed as a work of reference with detailed data tables throughout, the book also contains a range of illustrations portraying typical examples of many of the locomotive classes featured.
