THIS APPEARS TO be the final volume in the 'Revisited' series - No 7 came before it - and covers 167 airfields from Acaster Malbis to York/Clifton plus three in the Isle of Man (10M). Andreas,Jurby and Ronaldsway. Many of those in England were bomber bases, but others further Kingstown, Carlisle. Here, there is the interesting story of two German escapees from the PoW Camp at Penrith who made off with a Magister, having persuaded the ground crew to start it! They were later caught and returned to internment.

Close by that entry is Jurby, 10M, whose training was interrupted by the arrival of a Sunderland which made an emergency landing, the crew escaping before the depth-charges exploded. Ronaldsway, on the island, became a Ground Defence Gunners School and later a Fleet Air Arm base, but returned to civilian use post-war.

A typical airfield was Driffield which housed a variety of types during the war from Whitleys to Uberators and Halifaxes, with a brief spell as a fighter station in 1941, while Elvington, which hosted two French Halifax squadrons, in 1953 came under American control and an 11,OOOft runway was laid plus a huge concrete apron to support B-47s and B-52s, but nothing came of it and the site is now the home of the Yorkshire Air Museum.

As in previous volumes, this provides a great deal of information with many well-produced Illustrations from a1915 B, E.2c at Redcar to a Tucano and Tiger Moth at Linton-on-Ouse. Interesting reading and recommended.
