Edward Wallis was a signal engineer working for the Southern Railway in the 1920s until his untimely demise in the mid-1930s. During that period he travelled the length and breadth of England recording signalling and track work scenes, but rarely trains.

His legacy is an archive of several hundred incredible views primarily Southern but also feature the Great Western and to a lesser extent the other companies. The SR and GWR have already been presented in respective volumes but now for the first time come examples from the other companies as well as a few SR/GWR that ‘escaped’ last time!

This is the fourth book in the hugely successful series of ‘Southern’ and Great Western’ Infrastructure images from the camera of the late Edward Wallis. Rather than concentrating on a specific railway company, this selection is more widespread and includes the LNWR, its successor the LMS and the LNER as well as a number of smaller concerns such as the Stratford & Midland Junction Railway.

Edward Wallis was a signal engineer working for the Southern Railway in the 1920s until his untimely demise in the mid-1930s. During that period he travelled the length and breadth of England recording signalling and track work scenes. He pointed his camera at the track, stations, and signals, in so doing providing what is probably a unique perspective on railway life in the 1920s and early 1930s. Nearly all of the collection is also previously unseen, having lain in drawers of glass negatives until copied now for the first time.

His legacy is an archive of incredible views primarily of the Southern Railway but also feature the Great Western and to a lesser extent the other companies. The SR and GWR have already been presented in respective volumes but now for the first time come examples from the other companies as well as a few SR/GWR that ‘escaped’ last time!
